2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Key Hires
This announcement follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our fans.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, Ben starts with us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having devoted the recent years creating and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving him soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the time to come.
David

Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an confirmed release date or consoles, but fans can expect more updates as creation progresses.
